Tahan commended for its community project

April 17, 2003

KUCHING - Tahan Insurance Malaysia Berhad (Tahan) has been commended of its community project, which focuses on the development of a knowledgeable and caring society.

"The Sarawak government is most pleased that a member of the private sector has needed its call for the development of a knowledgeable society, that is, one that understands and appreciate the importance of community needs, said Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr George Chan.

It was only within a knowledgeable society that community programmes could be carried out with maximum results and everyone could share the benefit, he stressed at the launching of 'Partners in Humanity' programme between Tahan Insurance and Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) at the State Library in Petra Jaya yesterday.

The support given to MRCS humanitarian efforts, he added, was indeed an outstanding example of good corporate citizenship in business and in service to the community.

He said, "I am glad to see a company - that in normal scheme of things is driven by profits - is also taking the initiative to be committed and involved in community work."

Dr Chan is also the chairman of MRCS Sarawak branch.

Earlier, the chairman of Tahan Insurance Dato Annuar Senawi said the company was promoting the spread of First Aid and CPR knowledge. He stresses that as active participants in society, all should do their part in giving back something to society.

He said, "The life of fellow human being is most assuredly precious and should be protected at all costs. When one is equipped with the essential knowledge of First Aid and CPR, one can be instrumental in noble effort of helping to save lives."

Tahan Insurance contributed RM 50,000 to support the work of MRCS and pledged to promote the sale of the society's first aid kits to policyholders, particularly motorists and motorcycle riders as well as the blood donation drive.

At the function, about 30 participants of the First Aid course received their certificates from Dr. Chan. A blood donation and demonstration on first aid were also held that day.

Present at the function were Assistant Minister of Housing Dr Abdul Rauf Abg Haji Zen and director of MRCS Sarawak Branch Loi Pui Ann
