The parties have signed a memorandum of understanding
(MOU) which will see more than 500,000 migrant workers from Indonesia
enjoying a healthier lifestyle and a better standard of living.
Tahan Insurance Chief Executive Officer Razidan Ghazalli said the venture
with Apjati is primarily to facilitate the arrival of Malaysia-bound Indonesian
workers.
Apjati is a non-profit and independent organization supporting the Indonesian
National Development Program in the supply of manpower. It has close to
400 employment agencies as members, making it the dominant player in the
industry.
Under this synergy programme, Razidan said, Tahan Insurance will be the
underwriter for non-compulsory risk insurance levies and personal loans
for the Indonesian workers.
“This is the first step in a long journey. It is a win-win situation
for both parties. The need for additional insurance protection for Indonesian
workers prompted Tahan Insurance to form this strategic alliance,”
he told Business Times after the signing of the MOU in Kuala Lumpur on
Friday night.
The workers, mainly in the construction and agricultural sectors, will
be given special status to enjoy special rates on airfares, banking facilities,
healthcare products, training and effective discounts.
Tahan Insurance will advise the Indonesian workers on participating in
the provision of loans, funds, travel documents and related authorised
transactions.
“As part of our Greenfield Project, our objective is to ensure
care and management of day-to-day risks. There is currently a need for
proper insurance schemes for migrant workers in Malaysia.
“This alliance is a clear-cut objective for Tahan Insurance to
become a key player in the regional market and indirectly becoming an
ambassador of Malaysia to the neighbouring countries.
“The event is significant as it forms part of Tahan Insurance’s
plans to go into regional markers,” he said.
The alliance, according to Razidan, is expected to be the seed of other
related ventures such as travel, health and surgical insurance and possibly
reinsurance.
