Family members of the three Rakan Muda Save-and-Rescue
programme participants who were drowned during their rescue training on
20 November 2006, received the insured sum of RM10,000 each from Tahan
Insurance Malaysia Berhad.
"The victims were insured under the Group Personal Accident; and
as the insurer, we are sensitive to the families' loss. We acted immediately
when we learnt about the incident to ensure that the families are given
what are due to them," said Irene Loo, Senior Vice President Claims
(Non-Motor) who presented the cheque to Penang State Youth & Sports,
Women, Family & Community Development Department on Friday, 24 November
2006. Irene added, "As a caring corporate citizen, we care and we
understand the tremendous sorrow and bereavement on the part of the families,
thus we acted fast."
It was reported on 21 November in major papers that the three youths:
Shikirin Abdul Malik, 20, Zafirah Mohd Yasin, 18 and Norfaezah Mohd Yusof,
18 were drowned entering a pond at the Seri Impian National Service Camp
in Kampung Relau Sungai Bakap, where the training was held. As a participant
of the Save-and-Rescue program, they were covered with Tahan Insurance
under the Group Personal Accident insurance that pays a sum assured of
RM10,000 each in the event of death or permanent disablement.
Irene Loo presented the cheque to Dato Jahara Hamid, State Exco for Youth
& Sports, Women, Family & Community Development at a solemn ceremony
held at the Penang State Youth & Sports, Women, Family & Community
Development Department.
